The stress of everyday life, the short time to eat and the abuse of junk food are factors that influence our diet, and therefore our health. Although there is abundant information about nutrition, it is difficult to raise awareness and improve our eating habits.

Therefore, it is convenient to know some general guidelines on which we can specify a menu appropriate to our needs and way of life. First of all, to have a correct diet we must balance the different food groups properly: the nutritional pyramid can be our guide in this task.

The foods of the nutritional pyramid for a correct diet

At the base of the pyramid are hydrates, which can account for up to 55% of our daily diet. In this group are bread, pasta, rice and cereals, which are especially important if we exercise daily as they provide quick energy. In case of leading a sedentary life, the proportion of carbohydrates should be lower since the calories they provide will not be consumed.

In second place are fruits and vegetables. In total we must consume between five and nine daily servings in total, distributed throughout the day. Vegetables and fruits provide proteins, vitamins and minerals that are essential for health. Next are dairy, yogurt and cheese (two to three servings a day) and meat, eggs and fish, sources of animal protein, which should also be included in two meals a day. Fats and sugars should only be included occasionally due to their low nutritional value and high caloric level.

Remember that to achieve a balanced diet it is not enough to take into account the proportions of food, there are also other factors that help us correct mistakes. For example, a correct diet as well as balanced should be varied so as not to bore you, appropriate to our personal tastes and the characteristics of our body.
