Both fruit and vegetables are two kinds of essential foods for our daily diet. For its ingestion it is important not only its selection when we are in a supermarket or a food store, but also its state of conservation. This determines, on many occasions, if these products are going to provide us with all the nutrients they are capable of providing us.
Fruit, as with vegetables, is a large container of minerals and vitamins. As the degree of maturation increases, the amount of sugars present increases to the detriment of vitamins, which progressively decrease. Therefore, it is important to consume these foods in an optimal state, where the balance between flavor and vitamin intake they offer is perfect.
Fruit and vegetable preservation
Refrigeration, except in some cases such as bananas, is the best option for the preservation of these foods. Fruits such as apples can stay fresh for up to two weeks inside a refrigerator and citrus fruits a maximum of three. But the way you store the products is also important. To obtain optimal conservation, it is interesting to separate the pieces from each other, either through containers such as tupperware or in different compartments of the appliance.
It is important, however, that our refrigerator is in good condition for refrigeration. That is, if the refrigerator is too wet or cold, it can result in a worsening of the food, accelerating its ripening process.
An option that is gaining followers in recent times is the acquisition of bags with magic closure, so that the fruit can be deposited inside and frozen until the moment of consumption. This is an unbeatable way when we acquire or are given more fruits and vegetables than we can consume in a reasonable time of ripening. In these cases, it is advisable to wash the food before freezing or, even in the case of vegetables, scald it through boiling water.
Remember that it is important to wash the fruit and vegetables just before ingestion, because if we perform this task ahead of time we can accelerate the ripening process. Other products such as bananas, potatoes, onions or garlic are best stored outside the refrigerator, provided they are in a cool place, without excessive lighting and free of moisture.
